Learning How To Read Again
I have spent the past month getting into a new reading habit. It has helped me excel in my reading speed, and I am getting through books quickly. However, I think I am going to unlearn this habit starting from today.
I find myself often missing points, and it is dimming my ability to critically think and appreciate the piece of writing in front of me. If you have been on this platform for long enough, you see articles all the time about reading 60 books in a year or something crazy like that.
Although it is great for some people, I do not think it speaks to the true art of writing. We all know writing to be a creative process filled with intricate details and perspectives. So why when reading someone else’s work, do we not want to take time to ponder on their creative process. Line by line, paragraph by paragraph, they constructed a masterpiece for us to read.
We must give special consideration to the things the author tries to do in their writing. It is the best way to learn new skills and find appreciation in the art you are fond of, whether you are a reader or writer. My speedy approach to reading someone else’s work would never be tolerated when I read my work. So why should I do it?
