Really intriguing read! I think they can coexist but our free will must only be subject to our desires. People who believe in free will often believe that they are free to an extent where they can choose outside of their own desires.

However, if one believes that you can only choose subject to your desire, then you still have choice but your fate is bound by your desires.

Schopenhauer is well known for understanding free will in this way. We are free to choose, but we do not choose against our will. And our will becomes our representation of the world around us.
