The Future Of Further Education
Written by an angry intellectual, you have been warned.
Anyone who is an intellectual like me has to have some worry for the future of further education. We have seen education do a complete U-turn over the past years as competition continues to increase in the market. Plato suggested that the object of education is to teach what is beautiful. And that thing which is beautiful is knowledge.
Before companies pushed their competitive agendas on universities, knowledge was a meaningful pursuit on its own. Instead of using knowledge as a means to an end, education convinced the greatest intellectuals that it is the end to our means.
When we look back in history, we see figures like Isaac Newton and Galileo using knowledge as an end. They would express their curiosities about the world, whether it was “an apple falling from a tree” or thinking about the stars out of their reach. They had questions. And if they were left unanswered, it would leave them unsatisfied. So the pursuit of knowledge gratified their hunger to learn more about the universe and themselves.
Education was at the centre of this pursuit. Once knowledge was found it was not right to keep it all to yourself. It was a joy to tell and teach others about the discoveries made. However, we live in a time where education has become devalued, and I believe…
