The Need To Feel Important

In “How To Win Friends And Influence People” by Dale Carnegie, we learn very quickly that we all want to feel important. It is a driver behind all the things that we do.

This does not necessarily mean we all want to be leaders or a CEO of a massive company. I think we can look around and see that that is far from the case. However, what it does mean is that we all want to be a part of something, often bigger than us. And we want to contribute in some way to others lives.

It is essential that we feel valued as humans. We often forget that much of our younger years are spent hearing how special and important we are. Our parents Cleaning up after us and ensuring we were well fed as part of their daily rituals were ways to tell us we are important.

However, sometimes it is not even about what we contribute or the things we are part of that makes us feel important. It can also be the knowledge that someone else sees you as important. We tend to take for granted those who value us outside of our accomplishments and efforts.

If you were to ask yourself the question, “How many people care about me?” Do you have a quick and snappy answer? Probably not. We
