What Leaders Can Do to Engage Their Teams

Empowering leadership is a style of leadership that gives employees the power to complete their work. Contrary to common belief, people do not need to be motivated to get their work done. They need to be given the power to do it.

Empowering leaders deploy four strategies to give their team members the power needed over their work. These strategies are:

  1. Highlighting the significance of your team members’ work
  2. Allowing employee participation in decision-making
  3. Emphasising employee strengths
  4. Removing bureaucratic constraints

Although these strategies have improved the world extensively, research has shown that leadership models only work to an extent. Having the right people for the job and team is also essential.

The Unengaged Team & Empowering Leader

We would like to think that leaders who empower their teams would have teams full of energy. Although their teams, on average, perform better than others, the type of people in their teams makes a massive difference in their performance.
