Your 9–5 Will Never Be Enough

I got my first corporate job at 18, and I have been working there for three years. Now, I know what you are thinking. How have I come to such a definite conclusion on 9–5’s at only 21 years of age.

Today, I was going through the Japanese philosophy of Ikigai. You can see from the image that our profession is between what you can be paid for and what you are good at. However, there is a problem with this.

For me, none of these things truly bring the satisfaction we seek in life. As humans, we want to feel appreciated and part of something. We also want to contribute.

What we are good at tends to be applauded, and this helps us feel appreciated. However, the feeling of appreciation is not the only thing we want in our jobs. Statistics show us everywhere that many are dissatisfied with their jobs. So, if most people did what I did, which was to do something they were good at, then clearly there is something wrong.

Our Mission Drives Us

Upon self-reflection, I think the model may have to be slightly changed. What fuels our satisfaction as humans…
